Women’s History Month: The Hands That Feed Our Community
March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the visionaries, trailblazers, and everyday leaders who have shaped our society. At Nourish LA, this month feels especially personal. Our organization was born from the vision of a woman—our founder, Natalie Flores—and is powered daily by a dedicated community of women who believe that food is a fundamental human right.
From Victory Gardens to Modern Food Justice
Throughout history, women have been the primary stewards of the land and the heart of community nutrition. During World War II, "Victory Gardens" became a symbol of resilience, with women across the country transforming backyards into productive farms to feed their neighbors.
Today, that same spirit lives on in the streets of Los Angeles. Whether it’s organizing our weekend food distributions, managing our Good Karma Gardens, or leading our composting initiatives, women are at the forefront of the modern food justice movement. They aren't just providing calories; they are cultivating dignity and hope.
Leading with Compassion and Action
Nourish LA’s story began with a simple act of sharing surplus from a local garden. That seed of an idea grew because of the tireless work of female volunteers, organizers, and donors who refused to see their neighbors go hungry.
When we look at our distributions in Mar Vista and beyond, we see:
The Strategists: Who coordinate with local businesses to rescue thousands of pounds of high-quality food.
The Growers: Who teach our community how to turn "waste" into wealth through composting and urban gardening.
The Caregivers: Who ensure every person who walks through our line is greeted with a smile and a heavy bag of fresh produce.
How You Can Honor the Movement This Month
Women’s History Month is about more than looking back—it’s about growing forward. Here is how you can help us continue this legacy:
Support Female-Led Initiatives: Donate to Nourish LA to help us expand our reach. Your contributions directly fund the logistics of getting fresh food to families.
Volunteer Your Time: Join us at a Sunday distribution. See firsthand the incredible women (and men!) who make this mission possible.
Start Your Own "Victory Garden": Whether it’s a pot of herbs on a windowsill or a raised bed in your yard, reclaiming your food source is a powerful act of history in the making.
This March, we honor the women of our past, celebrate the women of our present, and plant the seeds for the girls who will lead us into a more equitable future.
Thank you for being part of our story.
