August 17th is National Nonprofit Day, a time to recognize the vital role grassroots organizations play in creating healthier, more equitable communities. At Nourish LA, we are taking this month to celebrate not only our dedicated team and volunteers, but also an exciting new chapter in our journey: Nourish LA is officially an approved 1% for the Planet Environmental Partner!
What Being a 1% for the Planet Partner Means for Us
1% for the Planet is a global movement that connects businesses and individuals with vetted environmental nonprofits. As an approved partner, Nourish LA can now directly receive funding from businesses that pledge 1% of their annual sales to environmental causes.
Why does food recovery and community nourishment count as environmental action? Because food waste is an environmental issue.
When surplus produce is rescued and shared, it stays out of landfills where it would otherwise release methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
By closing the loop with our Good Karma Gardens and composting initiatives, we are restoring soil health and building a sustainable, zero-waste food system right here in Los Angeles.
This partnership verifies that our work isn't just about hunger relief—it’s about planetary health.
Honoring National Nonprofit Day
National Nonprofit Day was founded to honor the impact that community-driven organizations make every single day. For Nourish LA, being a nonprofit means serving as a bridge: connecting excess food with local families, turning organic waste into rich soil, and providing a place where neighbors can support neighbors.
We don't do this work in isolation. It takes a network of volunteers, local donors, and mission-aligned businesses to keep our distribution thriving.
